The performance of councils in England on complaints investigated by the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) in 2009/10 is set out in individual ‘annual reviews’, published today (19 July 2010). Each annual review provides a summary of the complaints the LGO has dealt with about a council in the year 2009/10, including statistical data. All the reviews are listed in an A to Z on the LGO website at Councils' performance.
The Ombudsmen say that complaints are valuable in helping councils identify how services can be improved. When someone is not satisfied with the way a council has dealt with their complaint they can come to the Local Government Ombudsman for a free, independent and impartial judgement.
They hope that local authorities will use the reviews in a positive way, as part of their corporate quality assurance and performance management processes. The reviews will also be of interest to local people in holding their council to account.
The annual reviews also bring councils up to date with developments in the LGO service. There will be more information about this in the LGOs’ forthcoming Annual Report 2009/10, which is due to be published at the end of July 2010.
Annual reviews for the previous three years are also available on the website.
